PARADOX – The Gospel of Shadows is a multidisciplinary exhibition by Olivier Salvas that explores the contradictions that define contemporary life and the hidden tensions that shape our identities. Combining acrylic, aerosol, and pastel, Salvas creates vibrant, emotionally charged paintings that mark a powerful return to colour. Dynamic, saturated, and deeply expressive, these works inhabit a darker symbolic universe where shadow becomes a metaphor for everything we conceal, carry, and ultimately confront.

The exhibition was released in two distinct chapters, creating an evolving dialogue between society and self.

Part I confronts the paradoxes of the modern world through a narrative-driven universe populated by five symbolic characters: The Fallen Artist, The Vampire Politician, The Time Traveler, The Evil Preacher, and The Urban Monster. Each embodies a contradiction of contemporary existence, from the romanticization of the past and the illusion of political progress to the rise of extremism, vanity, fear, and repression. Moving through a surreal psychological landscape, these figures challenge viewers to reflect on their own place within the shadows of society.

Surrounding and informing the paintings is a photographic series by Rory McLeod, captured in a grainy vintage style that sharply contrasts with the explosive energy of the painted works. Rather than serving as documentation, the photographs deepen the exhibition's narrative, introducing a nostalgic stillness that amplifies the emotional tension. Together, painting and photography create a world where light and darkness, colour and grayscale, clarity and distortion coexist, yet never fully reconcile.

Part II shifts the focus inward. Where the first chapter examined the contradictions embedded in culture and society, the second becomes a personal act of reflection. The symbolic characters remain present, but the gaze turns toward the artist himself, exploring his own relationship with paradox, identity, vulnerability, and self-perception. This continuation transforms the exhibition from social commentary into personal revelation, blurring the line between observer and participant.

Throughout PARADOX, Salvas invites viewers to embrace uncertainty rather than seek easy answers. In a time that often demands clear positions and simple narratives, the exhibition suggests that truth exists within complexity, in the spaces between extremes, where contradiction, vulnerability, and transformation reside.

At its core, PARADOX asks a simple yet unsettling question:

Who are we without a shadow?
