Artistic Statement:
The collections and projects I create are based on the principles of a/r/tography. To be engaged in the practice of a/r/tography means to investigate the world through an ongoing process of artistic creation in any art form. When I plan a project, I think about topics that interest me, most of the time under the theme of identity and the environment. Once the subject has been chosen and the research completed, I create a visual story and a character who will be the narrator of the project. I put myself in the shoes of the character and collaborate with a photographer who documents the story that I have created. When I'm in the shoes of the character, I wonder about how they feel about the story. This is how I choose the direction for the paintings I create for the project. I paint from the character's point of view and not from my own. I choose the abstract to paint because for me, the abstract is connected to emotions and it allows us to better understand the story, a bit like watching a play. The names of the paintings are also chosen to contribute to the narrative framework

The Enchanted Garden at Bean Hastings
Olivier Salvas Artiste returns with “The Enchanted Garden”. For this collection, Olivier was inspired by the beautiful gardens around where he lives in British-Columbia, making connections about how nature affects identity and personal growth. As he was strolling through gardens, he let his imagination take him in a fantasy world where fairies and mythical creatures live.
Inspired by queer culture, Olivier created characters that tell a story of self-acceptance and inspired by animals he loves such as deers and elephants. The main photography for the project shows Olivier dressed like a fairy, as fairies were a major source of inspiration for the project. With the imagery of a fairy, Olivier wishes to bring conversations about gender identity and the meaning of binary, but he also wants to show how transformative and magical life can be when coming to terms with self-acceptance. With the fairy theme, Olivier also made a nod to his “Flamboyant” project, reclaiming the term fairy as a word used negatively when referring to a gay person or a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
“The Enchanted Garden” is being showed at Bean on Hastings until March 10th , 223
