PRESS RELEASE- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
90’s MIXTAPE
Olivier Salvas brings the energy and colour of the 1990s to Nomad Gallery November 6–19, 2026
Opening Reception: Friday, November 6 | 7–9 PM
WHITE ROCK, BC — Nomad Gallery is pleased to present 90’s Mixtape, a new exhibition by Vancouver-based contemporary artist Olivier Salvas, opening November 6.
Drawing on the colour, energy and cultural memory of the 1990s, 90’s Mixtape brings together a bold selection of abstract paintings that explore nostalgia, identity and emotion through expressive colour, gesture and layered surfaces.
The title provides the exhibition’s central metaphor. Like creating a mixtape, Salvas has selected each work for its particular mood, memory and energy. Together, the paintings form a visual playlist—part nostalgia, part discovery, and entirely contemporary.
“The works are selected like tracks on a mixtape, each one carrying its own mood, memory and energy.Together, they create a visual soundtrack to the 1990s.”
Rather than literally depicting the decade, Salvas translates its spirit through abstraction. Bold colour, movement and gesture evoke the atmosphere of 1990s pop culture and urban aesthetics while allowing the paintings to stand independently as contemporary works.
The exhibition continues Salvas’ ongoing exploration of the 1990s, following his broader The 90s body of work presented in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. It also reconnects with his earlier Flamboyant series, where colour, excess and expressive energy became central to his visual language.
Salvas is a Montreal-born, Vancouver-based contemporary artist, curator, educator and arts advocate. His multidisciplinary practice explores identity, memory, visibility and belonging through painting and mixed media. He was a 2019 Canadian Culture Days Ambassador for British Columbia, and his Flamboyant collection received First Prize from the Federation of Canadian Artists in 2021.
90’s Mixtape runs November 6–19, 2026, with an opening reception on Friday, November 6 from 7–9 PM at Nomad Gallery in White Rock.
